From a SMSS Parishioner and Book Enthusiast

Saint John Bosco by F.A. Forbes (Tan Books).  Great book for men and women alike, but I think the men of our parish would particularly like and be edified by this book.  I especially love how St. John Bosco had a great devotion to Our Lady (Mary Help of Christians) -- great read for our Marian parish!  Great enjoyable summertime read as well.
Essays On Woman (The Collected Works of Edith Stein, vol. 2) Second Edition, revised (1996) by Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) Translated by Freda Mary Oben, Ph.D. (ICS Publications).  When I make this recommendation I think especially of the women of the Catholic Women's League and their mission to fullfil in society, but especially all women (i.e. mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, educators, etc.) who are involved in the formation of girls and young women.  A great read for men too, I imagine, to understand better the vocation and spirituality of women.
Mulieris Dignitatem, Apostolic Letter of Pope St. John Paul II on the Dignity and Vocation of Women.  If the women of our parish haven't read this Encyclical Letter of Pope St. John Paul II, then I would probably recommend reading this first before reading Essays on Woman.
Sacerdotii Nostri Primordia, the Encyclical of Pope John XXIII on St. John Vianney.  Great (edifying and enjoyable) read for all Catholics, but I especially think of any men in our parish who might be discerning a vocation to the priesthood.

This month - September 2020 - our book selection is: The Secret of the Rosary.

To make a book or movie suggestion or to give a book or movie review, email the Parish office and use Book Club as the subject line.

From SMSS Parishioner - August 2020

The Secret of The Rosary by St. Louis de Montfort (TAN Books).  With the month of October -- the month of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- fast approaching I cannot think of a better book to recommend to the parishioners of St. Mary Star of the Sea than St. Louis de Montfort's precious gift to the Church: The Secret of the Rosary.  Reading this book will -- or should -- change your life.  If you are not already a fervent devotee of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, then reading this book should prompt you to take up the practise of praying the Rosary daily with devotion and with love.  The author, St. Louis De Montfort, also wrote the Catholic classic True Devotion to Mary, but I recommend reading The Secret of The Rosary first.  Once you start praying the Rosary faithfully each day it will change your life all for the glory of God!
